Entitlements & Health Insurance

Health Service Executive

If you have had a mastectomy you are entitled to a first prosthesis and two mastectomy bras free of charge. This rule applies to all women.

If you qualify for a medical card, you are entitled to one prosthesis every two years and two mastectomy bras annually.

Medical card holders require a prescription from their Breast Care Nurse or G.P. This is sent to your local Health Centre who will then send you a Purchase Order. The Purchase Order must be taken to the company authorised by the HSE to supply prostheses and mastectomy bras on their behalf.

The criteria to determine whether or not you receive a medical card - or other medical financial assistance - can vary from one HSE region to another.
